Whether it’s why you should love your boobs or why you should not cut your own bangs, MTV’s “Girl Code” delivers fresh insight about all-too-familiar topics, and is sure to sometimes have its female viewers fervently nodding their heads while mouthing to the television screen, “Yessss, exactllllly!!!” Oprah calls that kind of catharsis an “aha! moment,” which sounds like a positive thing, so we’re highlighting a different part of the show each week that made us feel like maybe, just maybe, we’re not the loner freaks we originally assumed. The “Girl Code” comediennes are all strong, gorgeous women with unique personal style and confidence to boot, but, as we learned on tonight’s episode, that wasn’t always the case. Enter: photographic evidence of puberty! This blogger sho’ ain’t secure enough to dig up her own pre-teen pics, all of which feature hair that had yet to meet a proper flat iron, so it was more than impressive to see the “Girl Coders” put their pimply selves out there for the greater good. In this clip from the episode, they share with us their most harrowing tweenage shots, like the one of Jessimae, below, to prove that even the hottest ladies go through an awkward phase, too.

“I looked like an abstract painting,” Jessimae comments of her “crispy” hair and acne, while Jamie simply asks people to give her sullen, too-cool-for-school face a break. We would, if your scowl wasn’t scary enough to turn even Medusa to stone! And while we don’t exactly see why Shalyah – who was kind of cute back in the day — had anything to worry about, nobody surprised us more than the always adorable Esther. “I’m wearing, like, these coke bottle glasses, I got buck teeth and I’m covered in pimples,” she says of her nerdy throwback look.
For all the bad hair days you may still encounter, or the moments you’re suddenly reminded of how many tries it took for the School Picture Day photographer to get the right angle (nope, not based on personal experience AT ALL…), we hope this video serves as a reminder that all caterpillars eventually become butterflies.
